A magnetic slime robot that was likened to the Marvel villain Venom was able to maneuver through tight spaces and repair damaged circuits.
Earlier this year, a gooey, magnetic slime robot that can squeeze through tight spaces, grasp objects, and repair damaged circuits captured the interest of science fiction fans everywhere, drawing comparisons to the Marvel character Venom and generating an unprecedented amount of interest for its creators.

Li Zhang at the Chinese University of Hong Kong says, “I didn’t anticipate getting so much media attention after the New Scientist piece. In the days following its release, journalists from all over the world as well as several interested investors who wanted to know more about the possible financial benefits of further developing the robot contacted Zhang.

Now, Zhang‘s team wants to investigate how the robot may be used as a “third hand” for surgeons, helping with things like exerting pressure and holding gut tissue together.
Zhang’s team is looking at different materials that can stay longer and stop dangerous magnetic components from leaching out because one issue with the magnetic slime is that it can begin to dissolve in wet conditions similar to those seen in the human body.
