Wi-Fi 6 has been released and it promises to deliver more than twice the speed of Wi-Fi 5, but how much faster is it? We’ve created this blog post to try and answer that question. In this article, we’ll discuss how Wi-Fi 6 stacks up against Wi-Fi 5 and why you should choose one over the other when setting up your network.
What is the difference between Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6?
Wi-Fi 6 is the newest standard in wireless networking. The big selling point of Wi-Fi 6 is that it’s three times faster than its predecessor, Wi-Fi 5. Although that’s a significant difference, speed is more about what the devices can do with their connection rather than how fast the connection itself can be. So does this mean your wireless device will be able to download an HD movie in three seconds flat like it did back in 2008 on your old Wi-Fi network?
So does all of that mean you should rush out and buy a Wi-Fi 6 router for your home wireless network? Probably not. It will be faster, but you might not notice much difference in your day-to-day usage. The Wi-Fi Alliance also states that devices designed for Wi-Fi 5 can run on Wi-Fi 6 with no change or additional configuration.
What are the speeds like on a new router with Wi-Fi 6?
The speeds that Wi-Fi 6 provides are faster than what we see on Wi-Fi 5, but it is also hard to pinpoint how much faster. If you have a video buffering or some other information/data-intensive application it will load a lot faster but if your phone is just checking emails and social media, you might not notice the difference.
Are there any other benefits to upgrading?
Wi-Fi 6 provides a 4x increase in throughput over Wi-Fi 5, meaning faster internet. There are other benefits to upgrading: we’ve seen devices that use less power or go further with a single charge, or devices that just connect more quickly to networks.
A lot of these benefits are coming from the improved algorithms inside of the Wi-Fi 6 standard (the complex set of instructions that regulate how devices talk to each other) – instead of just hardware improvements – and in some cases, new hardware is needed. Other factors like your location, how much data you’re downloading, and how many other people are nearby can also affect speeds so keep this in mind when making any upgrade decisions!
Is there any point in waiting for future technologies such as Wi-Fi 7 or 8 before I upgrade my current router?
Wi-Fi 6 may be faster, but there are no major changes in the technology behind it. This means that at home, it will probably make little difference to you and your Wi-Fi network. You’ll get a little more bandwidth for networks with a lot of devices connecting to your home’s Wi-Fi, but if that isn’t the case it’s unlikely you’ll notice much of a difference.
Plus, many wireless protocols don’t run as efficiently as they do with new tech like 802.11ax coming out, so changing routers would also mean having to buy new devices and buy into whatever wireless protocol is in vogue at the time—much easier said than done.

Wi-Fi 6 is capable of up to 10x faster speeds than standard Wi-Fi. That’s fantastic for large files, but it also means that you’ll see a much slower response time for other tasks such as scrolling a web page or loading your phone’s home screen. You may not have even realized how long you wait for your page to load, so be sure to run a speed test on your current router before deciding whether you should upgrade. Make sure the device is right next to the router and then run the speed test at the same time of day that you typically use your Wi-Fi.
