You Better Believe the Hype: The Sony WF-1000XM4s Are the Real Deal

When Sony first introduced the WF-1000XM4s earbuds last year, it boasted that they were the world’s first truly wireless noise-canceling headphones with enhanced ambient sound. That might be true, but what Sony didn’t tell you was that they would also be the world’s first truly wireless earbuds you can truly believe in. I’m serious: You’ll be hard-pressed to find a pair of earbuds this good anywhere else at any price—and if you do, then please don’t tell me about them because I’ll just have to kick your ass for spoiling the party!

What I Expect

The hype over the Sony WF-1000XM4s is not without justification. Sonically, they’re phenomenal. Sony took one of the best features of the 1000X series and made it better: USB-C charging.

They retained their predecessor’s solid noise isolation while providing superior audio. But the thing that makes these so special is that they’re comfortable to wear for long periods at a time; something I never found myself being able to say about the 1000X models or any other earphones in general.

Add Bluetooth wireless and 15 hours of battery life and you have a headphone as well-rounded as they come–and with all three connection types (wired via USB-C included), no less!

What I Received

I finally leaped and bought my first set of truly wireless earbuds–specifically, the Sony WF-1000XM4s. Let me start by saying I’m not easily impressed; most new gadgets come across as a waste of time or over-hyped. But from the moment I unboxed these earbuds, I was left in awe.

The presentation box itself feels like you’ve gone through the effort of unwrapping a gift, complete with ribbons and bows. Upon opening the lid, you are greeted by a molded silicone case containing all five pairs of interchangeable tips that can be used for either wear around your neck for easy access or for stowing away in your pocket or bag.

How Well They Work

Sony’s newest offering in the wireless noise-canceling space, the Sony WF-1000XM4s, is almost like a public service announcement. This set of headphones is proof that you really can make a good noise-canceling headphone at a reasonable price point ($269), and it gives hope to us that we’ll eventually be able to leave our bulky active cancellation cans for something lighter.

These headphones won’t break the bank with any other superfluous features, but what they do have – superb active noise canceling, respectable sound quality (for their price) – works on virtually all surfaces and has long battery life – they’re worth checking out.

Features Galore

Sporting a fairly straightforward, no-frills design that takes cues from the iconic Sony walking man, the WF-1000XM4s was designed for those who demand the very best.

From top-notch noise cancellation to fantastic battery life and spotless Bluetooth performance – these are earbuds without many glaring flaws. The Sony WF-1000XM4s may not be perfect, but in this reviewer’s opinion, they’re close. For anybody looking for an excellent pair of high-end headphones that won’t force you to break the bank, I recommend WF-1000XM4s giving them a listen.

Unboxing and First Impressions

It’s been a while since I’ve gone back to the basics, so when I was handed the box with just two tiny buds staring back at me, it was a bit disconcerting. They looked (relatively) huge in the small box, a contrast to all of the tiny but mighty earbuds that had come before them. But it wasn’t long until they were pressed snugly into my ears and Sony’s signature WF-1000XM4s sound started echoing through my head:

crisp highs and deep lows played on equal parts — which is exactly what this listener likes! After getting over my initial panic, I soon realized that these headphones were remarkably comfortable — each earbud weighs less than half an ounce and never caused fatigue even after wearing them for extended periods.

Sound Quality Breakdown

A significant part of the Sony WF-1000XM4s sound quality is their excellent noise cancellation: it’s very easy to forget you’re wearing these earbuds at all. The passive noise isolation from the snugly-fitting in-ear tips helps a great deal, but the true headliner is their ability to reduce environmental noise, like planes and trains and traffic. The only times I could hear things outside were when the windows were open or when I was standing near them myself – which admittedly isn’t that often.
